Local Area
Kirkby Malzeard is a super village, situated in the lower Yorkshire Dales in the Nidderdale area of outstanding beauty.
It has a population of around eight hundred and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was known as ‘Churchei’, which means ‘church in the clearing’.
Kirkby Malzeard is a fantastic base, in which to tour and visit the spectacular places of interest within Yorkshire, which surround it. Not only is there fantastic walking, mountain biking and bird watching available locally, Ashknott Cottage is also just twenty miles from the stylish Spa town of Harrogate, famous for it’s Turkish Baths and of course Betty’s Tea Rooms! The Cathedral City of Ripon is just seven miles away, the thriving market town of Masham six miles away and the pretty town of Pateley Bridge just eight miles away.
The nearby thriving market town of Masham is a must for any visitor to this area. You’ll find two real ale breweries to chose from – The Black Sheep Brewery and Theakstons Brewery, both have excellent visitor centres and brewery tours, each offering something different. Stroll around the Kings Head Yard and visit the glass-blowing workshop and on the Square visit the Gallery for fabulous artwork and design-led crafts, the mouth watering chocolate shop and even an old fashioned sweet shop that will take you back to your childhood for sure!
There really is so much to do in this fabulous county! You can really do as much or as little as you would like, whilst on holiday in Yorkshire. You’ll find great pubs, with equally great food and whilst out and about do look out for the food specialities of Yorkshire! They range from Yorkshire Pudding served with the traditional Roast Beef, Fat Rascals (a cross between a scone and a rock cake) which go down very well with a strong cup of Yorkshire Tea, Yorkshire Curd Tart, local to the Yorkshire Dales and of course our Yorkshire Cheeses, now marketed worldwide by the famous duo ‘Wallace and Gromit’ who just happen to like a bit of Wensleydale!
The Yorkshire Dales – it’s the place to be!
